JMPD launches Joburg CCTV Response Unit

JOHANNESBURG – JMPD launches unit to deal with the mushrooming of crimes in the City of Johannesburg.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched the Joburg CCTV Response Unit on 14 May.

JMPD launched the unit to deal with the mushrooming of crimes in the City of Johannesburg. The unit will have 80 undercover officers who will immediately respond to crimes captured in the CCTV.

MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun told the officers to deal harshly with the criminals.

“Don’t negotiate with lawbreakers. We did not send you for training and give you pistols and handcuffs so you can negotiate with criminals,” said Sun.

“You must make sure that you do your job and the criminals are brought to the book of the law. I will make sure that from my side together with the assistance of the acting chief that we go and engage with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authorities (NPA) to say please don’t drop the ball when the JMPD has picked it up and run with it.”

The MMC ensured the officers that he will protect them in court if they fight crime to protect Joburg residents. “You must make sure that these criminals understand what is law enforcement. We do not issue JMPD officers with pistols, handcuffs and pepper spray for nothing. Use it when there’s a need to. I’ll be the last person to defend you all the way to the court. Do not fear the criminals.”

Metro police Chief David Tembe said on Twitter that Joburg residents will not suffer at the hands of criminals.
