Bringing basketball to Christ Church courts

NOORDWYK – Christ Church has big dreams for their new basketball academy.

Christ Church College celebrated the establishment of a basketball academy at their school.

The academy was initiated in September last year by Reece Prinsloo who is the captain of Basketball National League champions Soweto Panthers and is also the deputy head of sports at the college.

With his experience as a national basketball player, Prinsloo said he felt that the learners needed more experience in different sports, while also keeping them active, and started the academy with 17 players between the ages of nine and 18. The academy has grown since last year, with an extra eight players joining.

A spokesperson for the school Zeenath Sathiah said, “We are hoping to introduce basketball at Christ Church College in term three this year. Reece aims to ignite a passion for the game with pupils in the hope that this will ultimately lead to a brighter future for basketball in South Africa.”

Prinsloo added that he aims to create an atmosphere of fun and a love for the game as well as give them a spiritual foundation which has been his greatest strength and motivation.

His primary goals at this moment are to mold at few players who would be able to play alongside him in the Johannesburg Basketball League at a competitive level as well as to have a Christ Church College team compete in the schools’ league next year.
