Give matric learners a chance to glam up for dance

NOORDWYK – The Princess Project in Midrand is calling for assistance.

The Midrand branch of the Princess Project is calling on the community for support.

The Princess Project is a countrywide charity that assists matric girls from disadvantaged backgrounds by helping them with ball gowns, dresses and make up for the matric dance each year.

The project runs through donations of dresses and the services of hairdressers and make-up artists to give the matric girls a special day. The Midrand branch, which is based in Noordwyk, is headed by resident Ruby John.

John said, “The project is amazing to be part of. It’s not only about letting them looking good on the outside but making them feel special and good inside. The project gives young women the confidence they need as they transition out of high school.”

She added, “If we can give someone from a tough situation the opportunity to be glamorous for an evening it will make such a difference.”

The non-profit organisation is in its second year and John is appealing to the local community for any assistance to keep the project going. She said, “The main thing that we will need is storage space or a space where we can operate efficiently.”

She has a number of dresses donated by the various residents and retail stores but is in desperate need of a workspace as she is currently working on the project from her home.

“I would like to have a nice place with a changing room for the girls and to store the dresses. We need a home.”
