Voting goes smoothly in Rabie Ridge so far, despite some residents’ threats ahead of Election Day to shut down voting stations

RABIE RIDGE – Ahead of Election Day, some residents had threatened to shut down all voting stations in Rabie Ridge after the Johannesburg Metro police, along with the Red Ants, removed their shacks on 30 April. Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, explained that all of the shacks had been erected illegally on private properties.

The community of Rabie Ridge is queuing to cast their votes, and the atmosphere is, for the most part, peaceful.

This, despite some residents threatening that they would shut down all voting stations in Rabie Ridge after the Johannesburg Metro police, along with the Red Ants, removed shacks in Rabie Ridge on 30 April.

Thembinkosi Jonas, one of the affected community members, expressed that he will not vote, and that they would close down all voting stations in Rabie Ridge. He added, “Now we are being chased away like dogs. We did not vote for this type of democracy and will not vote again if this is how we are being treated as citizens.” Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, explained that all of the shacks had been erected illegally on private properties and would be removed by the Metro police. However, Midrand Reporter‘s online journalist, Ntsako Mashaba, is in Rabie Ridge. He has found some voters who describe their hopes by making their mark in these elections.

Meanwhile in Kanana, it seems that while many came out to vote, younger voters were few and far between.
