#IMadeMyMark: Rabie Ridge Residents Association talks elections

RABIE RIDGE – The Midrand Reporter met with the Rabie Ridge Residents Association on 25 April to discuss this year's upcoming election climate as part of Caxton Local Media's #IMadeMyMark initiative.

The Midrand Reporter asked the RRRA what they thought about this year’s elections. Robert Stevens, who has been a Rabie Ridge community member for more than 20 years, said judging from the way things are it is difficult to say what exactly might happen because a lot of the communities and people feel like not voting because of the situations our country has been facing.

Stevens added, “Looking at our community we have been overlooked and rejected, our school for one is older than most schools in the communities around us and lacks infrastructure and resources to accommodate all the learners and make the educators’ jobs easier.”

Representing the youth in the community, Jenine Knight said that she does not see the importance of voting, her reason being the chances of them benefiting as the youth by casting their votes were very slim. “Whenever it is time for the elections we are promised lies, therefore, a lot of the youth do not want to be a part of the mediocrity.”

When asked about the key features he would look for in order to choose a political party to vote for, Charles Jones who is the leader of the RRRA, said if he were to choose an ideal party to vote for it would have to be a party that delivers effective services in their community.

He added, “A party that will serve the community because our schools and police stations are under-resourced and the youth do not have jobs so I will vote for a party that meets the needs of the community members.”
