Lions need a helping hand

MIDRAND – The Midrand Lions club is looking for specialists in their eye-testing and spectacle programme.

The Midrand Lions Club is currently looking for eye specialists to assist in their eye-testing and spectacle project.

President of the club Cliff Hocking said that the club had been, until recently, running the project to assist people from underprivileged communities with their eyes and helping gain spectacles by reusing recycled frames.

The club’s project has assisted numerous people in Ivory Park and Tembisa.

Recently, the eye specialist who had been helping them could no longer assist and the club is looking for a retired eye specialist or someone who can give their time to assist in the project. The club has its own eye-testing equipment at their premises.

Hocking said that anyone who would be able to give their time for a few hours every two weeks to keep the project going would be making a difference to the community.

Interested parties can contact Hocking at 082 411 2824.

The Midrand Lions Club is known to run initiatives to uplift the community.

Earlier this year, the club and the Rotary Young Professionals of Sandton were set to kick off the hearing awareness campaign.

The initiative was a joint partnership with the Rotary clubs in Morningside and Fourways and other Lions clubs in Pretoria, to change the face of hearing awareness for the future.

Last year, in November, the club offered a free diabetes screening at the Boulders Shopping Centre.

Hocking said the World Health Organisation estimated that diabetes contributed to more than five million deaths per year.

He added that it is the eighth leading cause of death in the world and the numbers are rising.

“Therefore, it has become known as the ‘silent killer’ disease or even referred to as the tsunami disease of the 21st century, killing more people worldwide than aids and cancer combined.”
