City of Johannesburg created 110 000 new jobs reducing unemployment by 1.1 per cent

JOBURG – The city is set to launch a new workers database that will assist job seekers to find employment.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba delivered his State of the City Address on 30 April.

One of the biggest talking points was the number of new jobs created in the financial year between 2017 and 2018 which stood at 110 000.

Mashaba said the City had overturned the ‘atrocious’ number of job losses. “Reducing unemployment by 1.1 per cent, our city is growing for the first time in a long time.”

The economic growth in the past financial number increased from 1.4 per cent to 1.7 per cent and the mayor said they looked forward to the data for the 2018/2019 rates as they predicted it will increase.

Some of the other economic talking points during the address were that the City had facilitated investment worth R8.7 billion. Mashaba added that they have set a higher target for this current financial year at R16 billion.

The economic growth has helped small to medium business as the city has been able to support more than 23 000 SMMEs to grow, harness and create considerable employment.

By the end of this financial year, the City is set to launch a new initiative Worker Seeks Database which will serve as a resource to register qualified persons looking for employment opportunities. The purpose is to have a database of the unemployed to be made available to private sector companies that are hiring.
