Mayor Herman Mashaba addresses residents of Rabie Ridge during IDP summit

RABIE RIDGE – The IDP meeting discussed various issues including the disputed land on farm 10 IR Allandale.

During Region A’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) summit on April 6, in Rabie Ridge Community Hall, Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba addressed a packed audience on the municipal budgetary allocations for service delivery for this financial year, 2019/2020.

The City of Johannesburg said the meeting was attended by many stakeholders which included business leaders, local residents and academics who wanted to contribute to the City’s service delivery plan for the next financial year.

Mashaba informed those in attendance of Diphetogo, which translates to ‘real change’, which aims to accelerate service delivery in five areas: economic growth, efficient service delivery, infrastructure development, public safety and housing provision.

“We are committed to transform society and to ensure that socioeconomic transformation is experienced by all. During my administration, people will be at the centre of development,” he said, adding that during these type of engagements it is important that local views are taken into consideration.

Some of the City’s projects in the region was outlined during the meeting, they include road infrastructure and road upgrades in Ivory Park and in Noordwyk.

During the question and answer session, residents from Region A, the Rabie Ridge Residents Association handed a memorandum of their grievances to Mashaba. Their concerns included unemployment, illegal substance abuse, adding sporting facilities and housing development.

Charles Jones from the local Rabie Ridge association urged the City to continue its work to provide basic health care and services such as housing, water and electricity in the area.

The session got heated when the dispute of land in region A, farm 10 IR Allandale was discussed, the contention was the City’s decision not to buy the land because they found that the price was inflated – the price tag for the land was R250 million. The City said the owner of the land previously brought it for R7 million but the mayor confirmed that they have begun a process of expropriating the land to benefit the community.
