Call for proposals to host a sponsored #JoziWalk 2019

JOHANNESBURG – This is what #JoziWalks is all about.

Are you a passionate Jozi resident? Do you want to share the delights and little-known secrets of your neighbourhood with other Joburg residents? Then apply to host a #JoziWalks in May.

The event is back for the third year, and this year #JoziWalks hopes to build on the success of previous walks, to grow the number of attendees and expose even more people to Jozi’s many vibrant people and places. The initiative is a series of Johannesburg Development Agency sponsored walking tours that aim to get Joburg residents to explore the city on foot, connect with their neighbours and encourage people to reflect on what makes neighbourhoods work.

“Since 2017 when we first launched #JoziWalks, over 900 people have participated in these free community-led walks. We have explored more than a dozen different Joburg neighbourhoods and we have unearthed some fantastic stories about this dynamic city,” Douglas Cohen of the agency said.

“The walk is about celebrating the real Jozi and the people who call it home. We want to pay tribute to the spirit of the city and create connections that give us insight into what makes a suburb successful.”

The agency again invites proposals from local community activists, influencers, tourism entrepreneurs, walking tour operators, heritage specialists and enthusiastic residents who want to create a #JoziWalks experience in their neighbourhood.

Anyone is eligible to host a walk but they must take place in neighbourhoods in which the agency has a development project or focus, including the inner city and surrounds, Soweto and surrounds, Diepsloot, Orange Farm and Alexandra to mention a few.

The agency also encourages hosts to consider a central theme for their walk, from food to fashion, to attract a more diverse range of walkers and showcase the many different facets of the city.

Ten walks will be selected for the #JoziWalks weekend which will take place over the weekend of 18 to 19 May.

Each successful walk application will receive a set sponsorship amount to plan and implement a walk.

Applications to host a walk open close at 4pm on 22 March.
