The ball is in your court, Dainfern

DAINFERN – Beach tennis comes to town with a round robin tournament at Dainfern Tennis Club.

Beach tennis was launched with smiles, joyous laughter and cheering at Dainfern Tennis Club through a well-attended round-robin tournament.

The weather was kind to all present at Dainfern Lifestyle Estate when the beach tennis court was split into three smaller courts so doubles matches could be held en masse throughout the morning of 9 March.

“The feedback was very good, everyone loved it,” said Samantha White, the general manager of Tennis Inc, which runs tennis at the club. “The rules of beach tennis are simple and the game is easy enough so people who have never played tennis or badminton can still do fine.”

Chocolate hampers and ice towels were given as prizes on the day, but everyone was a winner thanks to the fun they had.

“We want to grow beach tennis at Dainfern,” said the tennis club’s chairperson, Merryl Flynn.

“As far as I know we are the only estate in Joburg to have beach tennis on the estate.”

The tennis club hosts social beach tennis every Wednesday evening. Flynn invited any residents of the estate to join in and non-residents were also welcome provided they joined the tennis club.

Flynn said the club would host practices for international players ahead of the Arnold Classic, where beach tennis will feature, in May. She also hopes to develop two more beach tennis courts and one day possibly host international tournaments.

Tennis South Africa technical manager, Iain Smith attended the launch. “Beach tennis is a fun and competitive sport that allows families to engage,” he said, commending Dainfern for playing the sport.

“In the bigger picture, we want to launch more beach tennis venues and events around South Africa. We will also hold regionals and national championships for the first time before we send a team to the World Championships in Russia in August.”
