Kids get in the kitchen

CARLSWALD – The Express!ons Centre hosts a special Gourmet Gurus cooking class to give kids confidence in the kitchen.

The Gourmet Gurus after-school programme is giving children a love for cooking.

The cooking classes form part of the Carlswald-based Express!ons Centre’s weekly extra-mural programme schedule called the Express!ons Kids Club. Express!ons Centre also hosts a preparatory school which caters to foundation phase education from preschool to Grade 4.

Founder Carla De Gouveia said, “Express!ons Kids Club started as a holiday-care programme in 2012 which ran through the third and fourth term holidays and was opened to children around the area in Midrand. We also run an after-care programme that helps with homework and host extra-murals.”

The weekly programmes host karate on Mondays, visual art on Wednesdays, yoga on Thursdays and the Gourmet Guru cooking classes on Fridays. De Gouveia added that a partnership with United Cricket Stars for Tuesday cricket is currently in the pipeline.

The Gourmet Gurus is a well-rounded cooking class that teaches children a plethora of methods. De Gouveia added that their classes covered a range of topics and gave the children hands-on demonstrations to give them confidence in the kitchen.

“I think it’s important to give them confidence so they understand what a blender does or the importance of washing your hands. It’s to teach them knowledge about the kitchen because at the end of the day you need to feed yourself.

“It’s to expose them to different techniques and ways of cooking.”
