Go down a shaky road

NOORDWYK – Following a number of accidents in front of Noordwyk Primary School, there will be changes coming to 9th Road.

A learner from Noordwyk Primary School was hit by a reckless driver on 6 February and the City is planning to escalate the issue.

The incident occurred on 9th Road which is a gravel road. Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona said, “We can confirm that a Grade 3 learner was knocked down by a private transport driver and subsequently rushed to Carstenhof Clinic for observation.

“The parents of the said learner were immediately notified by the school principal who was at the scene of the accident.”

Mabona added, “Our preliminary investigation reveals that the said driver failed to produce a valid driver’s licence and was arrested at the scene by Metro police. The department will continue to monitor the situation.”

There have been a number of accidents in the past year including a girl who was hit by a speeding car on 21 February 2018 and needed reconstructive surgery following the accident. Another incident took place involving 22 school children sustaining minor injuries when the minibus taxi they were travelling in collided with two cars.

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin said that the condition of 9th Road has been an issue for a while but bad driver behaviour on the road is the problem.

Hicklin said that she has escalated the issue to the City of Johannesburg’s Mayor’s Office to get the road tarred. She added that a contractor has been appointed but the exact date for breaking ground has not been finalised.

She said that the issue of bad driver behaviour on the road does not only sit with minibus taxis, but also private drivers who have been extremely reckless on the road.
