Midrand police conduct drug search

NOORDWYK – An anti-drug operation was conducted at Noordwyk Secondary School to educate the students of the school.

The Midrand police alongside Sanca, their K9 Unit and the Metro police conducted a school search at Noordwyk Secondary School.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that the operation took place on 1 February between 8.30am and 10am and went well. “The learners were searched at the assembly and some of the learners were found in possession of drugs, cough syrup and cigarettes.”

She added, “The principal was happy about the search and, as police, it is our responsibility to ensure that learners in our policing precinct are learning in a safe environment at drug-free schools.”

The police, alongside South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), educated the learners about the dangers of substance abuse and to report users anonymously.

Tlamela added that in the end, none of the learners was arrested as their aim was not to punish, but the school will handle the matter within their internal policies.
