Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary calls on the community to help flamingo chicks

PRESIDENT PARK – The Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary is calling on the community for donations to look after flamingo chicks from Kimberley.

The Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary calls on the community for donations in support of flamingo chicks they received from SPCA Kimberley.

The organisation received 58 flamingo chicks following the drying up of the Kamfersdam in Kimberley where a colony of flamingos breed annually.

The chicks were left in a dire situation and on 25 January approximately 900 chicks were collected by the Kimberley SPCA.

Park manager for the Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary Kara Heynis said that the birds are being brought regularly with an expected 300 to 400 coming into Gauteng soon.

She added, “The biggest thing they need at this moment is to give the chicks the care and attention they need to survive.”

Andrew Jenkins from Save the Flamingos wrote on Facebook that due to the recent heavy rains in the area, it is expected that the birds should resume breeding normally within the next few days.

He added that if conditions remain favourable and the nesting birds stay on track, they will hopefully avoid any further searching for or ‘harvesting’ of deserted chicks or eggs and leave the flamingos to continue their breeding season on their own terms.

Heynis added that they need the community’s assistance to take care of the chicks. She said, “We currently are in need of shrimp and sardines to feed the chicks. We will also need blenders so if anyone can donate it would be great.”

Residents willing to donate to the organisation can call them on 011 315 7307.
