UPDATE: Klipfontein View residents protest water shortages on Allandale Road near Mastiff Road
KLIPFONTEIN VIEW – Traffic has been affected by the protest action.
Update 6 February 11.40am:
Ward 110 appointed councillor Nicole Rahn commented on the protests on Allandale Road and pointed out the affected infrastructure in the area.
Rahn said that the interrupted water supply in the area, which includes Industrial Park and Jukskei View, relates to a river crossing that was washed away on 31 January due to heavy rainstorms. There is also a burst water pipe on Mastiff Road that has caused problems with the water flow in the area.
MMC for the Environment and Infrastructure Service Departments Nico de Jager said,
“The damage is quite severe as we also need to replace the gabions to protect our infrastructure.”
He added, “Joburg Water has appointed a contractor who will slip line a pipe through the damaged section of the river crossing and link the original pipe again at the two valves we have installed. We expect to restore services late this afternoon to early evening if all goes according to plan.”
Stationary and roaming water tanks are available in the area for residents to use in the interim.
Update 6 February 10.30am:
Spokesperson for the Metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed that a protest on Allandale Road flared on the evening of 5 February. He added that law enforcement was able to get the protesters to leave the area. But they returned on the morning of 6 February.
He said, “Allandale Road is completely blocked from Dane Road to Modderfontein Road.”
Minnaar added that Metro police are currently on the scene monitoring the situation and diverting traffic in the area. He said that motorist should try to find an alternative route.
The residents are protesting due to alleged poor service delivery from the council and said that they haven’t had water since 31 January.
