Man sentenced for murder of girlfriend

MIDRAND – Police suspect that the murder was a result of a domestic dispute.

The Midrand police have welcomed the murder conviction and sentencing of a 30-year-old man.

According to Sergeant Matome Tlamela, the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court sentenced the man to 20 years imprisonment for murder in December 2018.

In November 2017, the man reported to the Midrand Police Station that his girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child, was stabbed in the neck by two men who offered them a lift to a popular shopping centre in Midrand. He alleged that the passenger in the vehicle pulled out a firearm and a knife, and led the couple to an open bush along Pretorius Street in Midrand, where his girlfriend had been stabbed.

The man, accompanied by police officers, led them to an open bush where they found the girlfriend’s body with her throat cut.

She was certified dead on the scene by paramedics.

Tlamela added, “[Upon further investigation] the police found out that the man had fabricated the story. He later confessed to the murder of his girlfriend during an alleged domestic dispute. The girlfriend wanted to take the child to stay with her, but the father of the child refused.”

“The Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso and management would like to thank the good work done and the expertise of the investigating officer, to go all out to find the information which led to the arrest of the perpetrator.

“We urge victims of domestic violence to report these incidents and to seek help or counselling at the Victim Empowerment Centre rather thank taking the law into your own hands.”
