City suspends services in Region A amid violent protests

MIDRAND – The reason for the protests is for demands for more housing in the area.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Funzela, said he’s shocked and disappointed that Council officials in Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Mayibuye were threatened this morning (24 January) following violent protests in the area.

According to the City’s statement, officials were forced out of their offices by protesters and demanded that services be discontinued for the day.

The reason for the protests is for demands for more housing in the area.

Following this, officials have been relieved of their duties for their own safety.

“We cannot put the lives of our staff members at stake,” said Ngobeni. “We understand the frustration behind the demands, however, violent behaviour is never a solution.

“We will keep customers updated on progress regarding this matter.”

The City apologised for any inconvenience caused. The City also said if the strike continues, revenues services will be suspended in Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Mayibuye.
