Midrand police launch ‘operation’ for filling station robberies

MIDRAND – The suspects robbed customers of their cell phones and money. They also robbed the store of cigarettes and money in the tills.

The Midrand Police Station wants to assure residents that all hands are on deck following two robberies at a popular filling station in just eight days.

According to Constable Thabiso Selowa, on January 2 at around 9pm, two armed suspects robbed a filling station store in Halfway Gardens. An undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes were stolen.

“The customers in the store were also robbed of their cell phones,” said Selowa.

The suspects sped off in a white Chevrolet vehicle and no one has been arrested.

In a separate incident, the same filling station was robbed by two suspects on 24 December 2018.

According to Selowa, the suspects driving a white Chevrolet vehicle arrived at the filling station at around 9.30pm asking for assistance with tyre pressure.

While a petrol attendant filled up the tyres with air, the armed suspects jumped out of the vehicle and forced the petrol attendant into the filling station store.

Inside the store, they robbed customers of their cell phones and money. They also robbed the store of cigarettes and money in the tills. No one was injured during the armed robbery.

Midrand Operational Commander Captain Thapelo Molepo said engagements are under way between the owners of the businesses and the security company that works at the filling station.

“The investigations are still ongoing and the [possibility] of an inside job is not being overlooked. All possible leaks are being attended to.”
