Thousands of learners who submitted late applications wait to be placed at schools

JOBURG – Thousands of late applicants are still waiting to have their children placed at schools.

The Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi said that his department had received over 24 000 late applications to have learners placed in grades 1 and 8 at the start of the school year.

So far, just over 8 000 have been placed while the remaining learners have been provisionally placed while their parents submit the necessary documents.

Parents are urged to submit the required documents to finalise placements. Furthermore, parents are advised to submit the required documents (birth certificate, ID copies, proof of address etc) immediately after placement.

Lesufi highlighted that parents who only applied this week would have their children placed last at a school. He said those who had used the online registration would be placed first, however, those who have submitted late applications will not have their child placed by the first day of school on 9 January.

He added that the unplanned financial implications of admitting late applicants are substantial. Additional funding will have to be found to finance educator salaries, additional classrooms, learning and teaching support materials and school furniture. “The department is doing everything possible to place all unplaced learners. We appeal for patience, calm and cooperation in the interest of learners,” said Lesufi.
