Fake alert does the rounds on social media

JOBURG – A message branded as that of the South African Department of Transport has been confirmed by authorities as a hoax.

A social media post which has been doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter reads,

“Effective from 15 December 2018 at 10am until 2 January 2019 there will be a string of roadblocks all around South Africa across all 9 provinces.”

The post further stated that those arrested will be kept behind bars until 3 January 2019.

It stated that culprits of drunk driving, outstanding traffic fines and licence discs, will have their vehicles impounded for a minimum fine of R3 500.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport Ishmael Mnisi confirmed that this post is not from the department and its road entities.

“Whilst we agree that people must be circumspect and safe on the roads, we condemn the use of our logo or corporate identity without any approval as this might be misleading to the public.”

“We will further investigate the source of this social media banner and take appropriate action.”

Nzimande called on motorists and the public to respect the rules of the road and law enforcement agencies.
