The December holidays have officially begun and it’s time to enjoy the festive season and making the most of the summer days. According to the Glass Recycling Company, people wine and dine at this time of year more than any other, which makes it a great time to recycle waste.
For example, each beer bottle you throw away after a braai with friends could be collected to dispose in a local glass bank or recycling point near you. Many service stations, restaurants and shopping centres have recycling facilities that you could easily make use of. This way, you can make a big contribution to the environment in a small way – it is after all the season of giving so why not give the environment some well-deserved TLC.

Here are some tips from the the Glass Recycling Company to educate your family and friends:
- Glass containers, bottles and jars can be recycled.
- In South Africa, you don’t need to place different coloured glass into separate banks, nor do you need to wash glass before disposing it at your near recycling point.
- It’s a great opportunity to take your children with you and instill positive values about recycling and keeping the environment clean.
- You can also take back returnable bottles to your retailer which will be refilled and reused. These include large glass beer bottles, certain glass cooldrink bottles and even some used for spirits and liquor.
Do your part to keep the environment clean and make a difference for tomorrow’s generation. Glass is 100 per cent recyclable and can be recycling numerous times without losing purity of strength.
