Workers in Midrand are armed with knowledge and ready to bring down crime.

Local police held a forum meeting for domestic workers and gardeners of Sector 3. The police shared tips on how workers can stay safe at their workplaces.

Chairperson for the sector, Mokete Makubakube said this meeting will open doors of communication between the police and domestic workers.

“This forum is for us to discuss issues of crime that affect our security and workers. We hope this will be the first of many meetings,” said Makubakube.

The Domestic Forum held on 15 November, addressed the burning issue of crime within the sector.

Police have urged workers to always remain vigilant at their workplaces, and carry the responsibility of keeping themselves and their employers’ homes safe.

Sergeant Tlamela said that this sector, which covers Blue Hills, Country View, Erand, Noordwyk and Crowthorne continue to be affected by crime.

“We want domestic workers and gardeners to be armed with information. Their safety and that of their employers is important,” added Tlamela.

Joey, who has been a domestic worker for eight years, said these forums are important for workers and employees.

“I am happy about the police’s initiative to educate us on how we can be safe. It is important for us as workers within this sector to know and help each other whenever there is a problem,” said Joey.

Police have expressed how much trust the employers have in their employees. The workers must not try to be the hero and put their safety first.

Philemon, who has been working as a gardener for more than 10 years, said crime in this area is still a problem.

“We are not safe in this community but it is good to know that the police are here to help us. As workers we must be united; we must be the eyes and ears of our community,” said Philemon.

The police have encouraged employers to play their part in keeping their employees and homes safe.

Tips from the police on how to keep safe:

• Be aware of your surroundings, at work and on your way to work
