Residential complex forum in Midrand to address escalating crime

MIDRAND – Common crimes are house robberies, break-ins and hijackings near residential complexes.

The Midrand police have invited body corporates and trustees to a monthly residential complex forum meeting on 21 November.

Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the purpose of the meeting was to address the escalating crime in residential complexes in the area and to discuss ways of improving security there.

“Most of the break-ins take place during the day,” he said.

“We advise people to be alert, keep doors locked and windows closed at all times, especially units that are close to a wall or fence. The items mostly stolen are laptops, TVs, jewellery and money.”

She added that they were appealing to homeowners to educate their domestic workers about safety issues. “We encourage them to profile and screen their prospective helpers before they employ them. This will help the police during their investigations in instances of crime.

“We also encourage drivers to be vigilant when driving home. They should always check whether they are being followed.”

The meeting will take place at the police station from 12 noon until 1pm.

“We would like representatives of complexes to participate and share ideas on how to deal with the challenges faced. Most representatives of complexes with a high crime rate do not attend the meetings which is of great concern.”
