#Midrand: Standards are set for healthcare sector

MIDRAND – The company offers training, as well as standards and quality management among other things.

The British Standards Institution held an event on 1 November at the Accolades Boutique Hotel in Midrand under the theme, Management Systems, as the solution to healthcare industry challenges.

Also known as BSI, it is a business standards company which assists businesses to improve performance, reduce risk and achieve sustainable growth.

Through its clients in 193 countries across the globe, BSI inserts excellence in organisations to improve business performance and resilience, while helping them find innovative and cost-effective solutions to support their needs.

The company offers training, standards, quality management, product certification, health and safety, cybersecurity, business continuity and brand protection.

One of the clients, a nursing and quality executive at a Life Healthcare Hospital, Dr Sharon Vasuthevan, said one of the challenges faced in the health sector is the accreditation of nurses and achieving compliance. She said there was a shortage of nurses and there were not enough trained nurses for the demand.

“The regulation body makes it difficult to train nurses and the South African Nursing Council was not supplying accreditation. The BSI has been great; it sets the standard and provides national core standards accredited on a single set of standards,” said Vasuthevan.

She added, “The training and review on an annual basis creates a culture of excellence.”

The BSI vice president for global healthcare in the medical device and hospital sector, Jaco Prinsloo, said the 86 000 clients in their books across the globe is the epitome of what the company is all about and what it seeks to achieve.

“South Africa is one of the far advanced countries in the world, although it is part of the developing nations, our emphasis is on the exposure in growing the healthcare sector to attain excellence,” concluded Prinsloo.
