Murder suspect cuffed at a Midrand taxi rank

MIDRAND – The suspect was found in possession of a black star firearm.

Three police officers who were patrolling near the Midrand taxi rank arrested a suspect after he allegedly shot and killed a man on 16 September.

The officers were on duty carrying out a routine patrol when they heard three gunshots from the taxi rank.

“The officers heard three gunshots and saw people running away from the taxi rank. They stopped to investigate. One officer saw a man hiding something at the back of his trousers. He ordered him to put his hands up and searched him,” said a spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Sergeant Matome Tlamela.

Tlamela said the suspect was found in possession of a black star firearm with one round in the chamber and 12 rounds in the magazine. The suspect was taken into the police vehicle. “Upon further investigation, the officer discovered the body of a man lying in a pool of blood. An ambulance was called and the victim was declared dead on the scene,” said Tlamela.

The suspect was charged with murder and is expected to appear before the Midrand Magistrates’ Court.
