‘Criminals feel the full effect of Operation Buya Mthetho’

MIDRAND – Four more suspects were arrested for possession of illegal firearms.

Members of the Ivory Park police crime prevention unit arrested two suspects for illegal possession of unlicensed firearms on 24 September.

The police arrested a 20-year-old man for alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm, while the second suspect was arrested later in the evening after another crime prevention team found him in possession of a pistol with the serial numbers erased.

The arrest of the two men brings the number of recovered firearms in Ivory Park to six in a period of a week.

Furthermore, a total of five other suspects had been arrested in connection with possession of illegal firearms.

The station commander of the Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Ngcobo said he was pleased with the recoveries and the arrests.

He said armed and dangerous criminals in the area continue to feel the full effect of the police’s Operation Buya Mthetho.

The operation is a crime-fighting plan that aims to stabilise the surge in lawlessness and to restore safety and public confidence in the country’s law enforcement agencies.

“Judging by the manner in which these firearms were recovered, it is clear that, had the community not played a role, these firearms would still be on the streets and terrorising people,” concluded Ngcobo.
