‘Cellphone snatchers’ roll vehicle after victim gives chase and alerts Metro police

CARLSWALD – Three of the five suspects were arrested.

Metro police busted three suspects who are believed to have stolen three cellphones from patrons at a Carlswald restaurant last night, 21 September.

A further two suspects are on the run.

Midrand police spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela, explained that the complainant and work colleagues were at the Carlswald restaurant when for suspects grabbed their cellphones and fled in a white Ford Figo.

The complainant then ran to his vehicle and gave chase. He found them on Lever Road and tried to stop them, however, the suspects fled.

The complainant then fired two shots in the air to alert Metro police who were conducting a stop-and-search operation. The suspects drove onto 14th Road and lost control of their vehicle and overturned.

The Metro police arrived on the scene and arrested three of the suspects, and recovered the cellphones.

All three of the suspects were injured in the accident, and one suffered a possible gunshot wound to his hip.

A case of common robbery was opened.
