Free self-defence classes held in honour of student who committed suicide after reported rape

MIDRAND – Women were taught different self-defence tactics to protect themselves.

In honour of Khensani Maseko, who recently committed suicide after she was reportedly raped, Ria Sebetsa Security Services hosted free self-defence classes for women on 25 August.

Michelle Maduray from the security services company said they had initiated a self-defence class for women in their area to end Women’s Month and to honour Maseko, a student from Rhodes University, who committed suicide earlier this month after she was raped in May.

“We heard about the sad death of Khensani and thought that having this class would address the issues of abuse against women. We hope this class will go a long way in helping women defend themselves and their children in instances of abuse,” she said.

Divashin Naidoo and Priyen Naidu from Urban Combat Tactics taught the women who had attended various defence tactics to use to protect themselves during attacks. Ria Sebetsa Security Services’ in-house social worker, Monica Phihlela encouraged women to consult, speak out or seek professional help with issues that are affecting them, including domestic abuse and emotional pressures that they may encounter.

Divashin Naidoo and Priyen Naidu demonstrate self-defence moves.

“Let us speak up and get help as women before it affects our children. I am available for counselling, including trauma debriefing,” she said.
