Service delivery operation yields positive results

MIDRAND – A shop manager was arrested for employing undocumented foreigners.

Three people were arrested during a service delivery operation held by Region A on 20 July.

Two male foreigners were arrested for not having their necessary documents, while the third person was a manager of a shop in Midrand who was arrested for employing undocumented foreigners.

Further to the above, a company was fined R1 000 for illegal advertising, while a supermarket was also fined for not servicing its fire hydrant.

The operation was carried out by Region A director Abigail Ndlovu with officials from various departments including the director of health in Region A, Nelly Shongwe.

Johannesburg Roads Agency painted markings on roads, cleaned up and unblocked stormwater kerb inlets around the CBD. The Metro police’s K9 unit sniffed for drugs and assisted the Department of Home Affairs with arrests. The Metro police’s equestrian unit was also part of the operation during safety patrols. Emergency services conducted fire safety and law enforcement awareness and the Department of Environmental Health carried out pest control and education awareness with informal traders.

“No one can invest in a dirty city. To attract investors we must make the city clean and safe for all. Cleanliness is a key requirement and one of the mayor’s nine pillars of leadership,” said Ndlovu.

Buildings were also inspected for compliance which resulted in a business owner being issued with a notice to stop construction for not following proper procedure.

Chief building inspector, Pierre Le Roux said the property owner was building without engineering certificate approving certain specifications of construction. “Walls are starting to crack. The owner must stop building immediately and follow proper procedures. Failure to do so, we will demolish the whole structure,” he said.
