24 protesters arrested in Clayville

MIDRAND – They threw stones and broke windows of the RDP houses.

 

A group of protesters were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property in Clayville after attempting to illegally occupy RDP houses.

According to the police, 24 people from Tembisa attempted to unlawfully occupy RDP houses in Clayville Ext 45 on 24 July. When the Metro police, together with officers from Ivory Park Police Station, attended to the scene, the protesters allegedly started throwing stones and damaging the windows of the houses.

Station commander for the Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo has welcomed the arrests. “Regardless of the issues raised by the protesters, damaging of property public or private property must be condemned. We want to send a strong message to any groups or formations that violence and anarchy will never be tolerated in our area,” he said.

Ngcobo also complimented the response time of the officers. “The police units and their Metro police counterparts were quick to respond and brought order to the area.”

All 24 suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court to face charges of malicious damage to property and public violence.
