Ikageng Crèche is cleaned up for Mandela Day

IVORY PARK – The Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Department of Region A of the City spent Mandela Day cleaning up at Ikageng Crèche.

Citizen Relationship Management and the Urban Management Department in Region A of the city, spent Mandela Day working at Ikageng Crèche in Ivory Park, where they were joined by the chair of chairs councillor Alex Christians and chairpersons of council committees and staff from Old Mutual.

The crèche, which has been operating under the auspices of the Midrand Child and Family Care Association for a number of years, has over 1 000 children in foster care in Midrand as well as Sibusiso Place of Safety in Glen Austin.

The day began with children from the crèche singing Happy Birthday to the late Madiba and also to four children who share birthdays with him.

Volunteers then divided into three teams. One team planted vegetable seeds, another painted the playground equipment and the final team cleaned the streets around the creche. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo donated a load of compost for the food garden and Old Mutual sponsored paint and brushes.

Regional director Abigain Ndlovu said, “Wearing a Mandela T-shirt once a year is not enough, we should get our hands dirty and perform actions that will make a real difference in people’s lives. That is the meaning of Mandela Day.”
