Fine or imprisonment for woman convicted for assault

MIDRAND – Woman convicted for assault with intent of grievous bodily harm.

A woman was convicted on 13 July in the Midrand Magistrates’ Court for assault with intent of causing grievous bodily harm in a domestic violence incident.

The court ordered the suspect to pay R20 000 as a fine or face six months’ direct imprisonment, suspended for three years.

“The case was opened in May and we hope that the outcomes of this case will encourage the community to know that women can also be convicted for assault, therefore, people should not shy away from reporting an assault or domestic violence even if a woman is a perpetrator,” said the Midrand Police Station’s spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela.

“Very often men have the perception that justice is not upheld if a woman is a suspect because they are commonly the complainants, therefore this case should clarify this issue to members of the community who shared the same views.”
