Debaters jet off to the Big Apple

MIDRAND – Two students from the Pearson Institute of Higher Education will be jetting off to The Big Apple debate in the US in August.

Dimakatso Buthane and Thandile Malangeni have debated their way to glory at the Pearson Institute of Higher Education (PIHE) and Cornell University’s week-long debate camp tournament.

The event, which was held in Midrand in conjunction with one of the most prestigious Ivy League Universities, gave a number of young voices a platform to exercise thoughtful arguments for positive change in South Africa.

A total of 100 students from both universities attended the debate camp, which culminated in an awards ceremony for the students who stood out above the crowd. Well-known personalities including PIHE brand ambassador, Maps Maponyane and Professor Sam Nelson of Cornell University attended the awards, showing their pride in the pair’s achievement.

Thandile Malangeni, who attends Pearson in East London, has been debating for almost five years, is studying toward a BCom law degree. “I can’t believe that I will be travelling to New York. This is amazing. I believe that it’s essential that you never stop learning throughout your life.

“During my trip, I will get to learn and experience many new things. Also, it has evoked a love of teaching in me and I would like to return to my previous high school and share the knowledge I have gained,” said Malangeni.

“I hope to become a better debater and a better mentor for those I coach debating too.”

Dimakatso Buthane, who attends Pearson in Midrand, is also studying towards a BCom law degree and hopes to become an attorney or advocate one day.

“I am currently working with disadvantaged schools and I teach others how to debate. This opportunity will enhance my teaching skills and help me gain more knowledge.

“I’m impressed with how our students articulated their thoughts confidently and persuasively throughout the week. I would like to congratulate both Dimakatso and Thandile for their tireless hard work,” she said.

“We wish them the best and hope that their experience in New York will expand their ability to think and listen critically,” said Dr Nhlanhla Thwala, academic director of the Pearson Institute.

The winners will jet off on a week-long all-inclusive trip to Cornell University in August where they will be exposed to a higher level of debate and experience international debating at its best.
