Ivory Park youngsters chosen to represent the police cluster in provincial debates

MIDRAND – Police recruit youngsters to elevate the fight against crime in schools.

A police initiative aims to promote safety in schools and involvement of young people in the fight against crime.

Ivory Park Police Station hosted children from surrounding schools for the Police Junior Leadership Program on 13 June. The aim of the program was to select youngsters who would represent the Ivory Park Police Station and the Ekurhuleni North cluster during the upcoming series of the debates in the provincial Police Junior Leadership Program.

Twelve young debaters were judged on their ability to debate crime-related issues and challenges that affect young people attending school.

Spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station Captain Bernard Matimulane said the program was designed to promote and nurture leadership development and character building among young people in schools.

“We want to recognise young people as key role players in the Safe Schools Program and crimes involving young people in communities. We also want to promote and facilitate problem-solving initiatives by young people on matters relating to crime and violence in schools and communities.”

Furthermore, the program seeks to create an opportunity for early and long-term mentorship. “We also mobilise young people in an effort and endeavour to address criminal conduct and anti-social behaviour,” said Matimulane.

Four out of the 12 participants were selected by a panel of five adjudicators to represent the Ekurhuleni North Cluster.

Head of Visible Policing at the Ivory Park Police Station Colonel Baba Mpotoane urged all the youngsters involved in the program to take the initiative seriously.
