Waterfall Hospital to host Vitiligo Day event

MIDRAND – There will be talks on newer treatment advances a lot of doctors don't know about yet.

The Netcare Waterfall Hospital dermatology department will host the World Vitiligo Day awareness event on 30 June.

Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin colour in blotches. It can affect the skin on any part of the body including hair and the inside of the mouth. The extent and rate of the skin colour loss are unpredictable.

A dermatologist at the Netcare Waterfall Hospital, Dr Lushen Pillay, said the free event is already fully booked. There will be dermatologists giving talks on Vitiligo.

“We will be starting a support group for people affected and infected by Vitiligo which there hasn’t been any before,” he said.

Pillay said the event will be about raising awareness about the disease. They will also offer education and newer treatment advances which a lot of doctors do not know about yet. Talks will take place from 2pm until 4pm. Refreshments and a lunch will also be served.

“We are trying to get Leleti Khumalo involved as she also has vitligo. Former Miss South Africa Candice Abrahams said she may also attend,” added Pillay.
