You could be arrested and sentenced for buying stolen goods – Midrand Police

MIDRAND – Two men sentenced for receiving stolen property.

Midrand police warn residents that buying or possessing stolen goods is a crime and can lead to one can be arrested and even sentenced.

Albert Mmola and Albert Makofane have been sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Midrand Magistrates Court for receiving stolen property.

Midrand police spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela said, “Police are hereby calling on law-abiding citizens to stop buying stolen goods because there is no difference between the thief and the buyer and according to law, they are both guilty and harsh sentences will apply to both.

“Several people are arrested daily for the possession of suspected stolen goods. Another trend is that criminals steal items, then sell them to an unsuspecting community member or one that is aware of the crime, only to later return to steal the same item from the buyer.”

Police have urged community members and dealers at second-hand goods shops to report all suspicious transactions to the police such as when the seller provides false details or when an item appears to have been tampered with.
