Olifantsfontein reservist arrested for ‘selling’ jobs

MIDRAND – She allegedly made them pay R7 000 each.

A woman police reservist stationed at Olifantsfontein Police Station has been arrested for allegedly ‘selling’ jobs to three people and swindling them of R21 000.

The 47-year-old suspect, who used to work at the Ivory Park Police Station, apparently promised the victims non-existing jobs at the Metro police department and made them pay R7 000 each.

The spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane said the three victims have identified the woman as the person who had tricked them in believing she had connections within the police service.

“All the victims knew her and they sometimes saw her performing police duties in her uniform,” said Matimulane.

“They fell for her tricks. Once they realised that the promised jobs were not materialising, they began to open cases.

“We are appealing to any member of the public who has been defrauded under similar circumstances to come forward and open a case to ensure that anyone involved in this scheme faces the full might of the law.”

The accused is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on charges of corruption. Station commander of the Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo has cautioned members of the public not to pay money upfront to anyone promising them jobs.

“Jobs are not for sale and anyone involved in such is committing a crime,” he said.

“We are prepared to investigate this matter and to arrest all involved if evidence emerges that there are still others implicated.”
