Kaalfontein mob kill man for unpaid bananas

MIDRAND – The man was assaulted and pelted with stones until he succumbed to his injuries.

A man was killed by a mob in Kaalfontein after he allegedly helped himself to bananas at the market without paying for them.

It is alleged that the 28-year-old took bananas at an informal market and left without paying for them.

A mob of about 40 allegedly went to the deceased’s home carrying his photograph on 27 May. The man reportedly arrived at his house at the same time as the mob. He was allegedly attacked without warning. He was assaulted and pelted with stones until he succumbed to his injuries.

Station commander for the Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo said what happened to the victim was unwarranted and cruel.

“Any complainant in a criminal matter should know that whenever a suspect in a criminal offence is caught they must be handed over to the police for further processing of the issue concerned. Taking the law into your own hands is unlawful and results in consequences for those involved,” said Ngcobo.
