Architecture student with a heart of gold

MIDRAND – She calls on the community to donate anything they have including clothes and toys.

She is so hands-on that her mother said she was meant to be a boy and not a girl.

21-year-old Lungo Katete could easily be mistaken for a 12-year-old. She is petite but possesses a gigantic personality. She loves drawing which led her to study architecture at the Wits University where she is doing her third year. She is also a semi-finalist in the Miss Eagle South Africa Brand Ambassador pageant. She uses her platform in the competition to fulfil one of her passions, to give back to disadvantaged children.

“I grew up seeing my father struggle to provide for the family. I know what it feels like to be needy because I had experienced it. Now that the situation is favourable I want to help children who are faced with a similar situation,” she said.

Katete who resides in President Park in Midrand calls on the community to donate anything they have including clothes and toys to give to an identified home for orphaned and disadvantaged children. “I love children and enjoy engaging with them. They have unconditional love and making them happy makes me happy. When you have nothing, even the small things make you happy and they count.”

She said she loves her journey in the Miss Eagle South Africa Brand Ambassador because it is an online pageant with different challenges which helps one develop. “It is not what I had expected. It is more about personality and developing yourself as a brand through social media.”

Pageants are nothing new to her. She has also entered a number of other pageants including Miss Commonwealth South Africa.
