Halfway House Primary School through their Friendship Giving initiative donated groceries, toiletries and toys to New Life Centre for Girls in President Park on 26 April.
New Life Centre moved to Midrand in June last year and accommodates 20 girls. The centre caters for children who have been abused, some had been living in squalor and exposed to prostitution and drugs, and others are orphans. Five of the centre’s children attend Halfway House Primary School.
“It took only a week for parents to respond,” said acting principal at the school Maureen Selowa.
“We have asked them to contribute with anything they have. I am humbled by how parents responded at short notice and gave more than what we had expected.”
Selowa added that such initiatives taught children compassion and a sense of responsibility towards one another.
The donations were delivered to the centre by a group of Halfway House girls who were accompanied by Selowa, the school’s counsellor Linah Racheku, student counsellors volunteering at the school, Neo Shake and Molebogeng Mpofu, and members of Midrand Police Station, Constable Thabiso Selowa and Sergeant Matome Tlamela.
Selowa thanked the Midrand police. “The police have offered great support to the school. That is the reason we brought them to the centre so they could also offer support to them.”
Founder of New Life Centre, Khopotso Nakin thanked the school and the parents for the donations. “The girls who go to school at Halfway House have not complained since they got into the school and they are happy to have been accepted by the other children. I and the women who are volunteers at the centre try to care for the children the best way we can. We thank the school for helping us achieve that.”
To end the day, Miss Halfway House School Ambassador Zoe Maota played the violin for the attendees.
