By-election battle for Ward 92 heats up

MIDRAND – ANC held their campaign drive for the upcoming Ward 92 by-elections.

The African National Congress held their door to door campaign on 15 April in preparation for the upcoming by-elections in Ward 92 on 25 April.

The ward includes Kaalfontein, Ebony Park and Allandale.

Violet Chauke, the deputy chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) and also chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in the ward, is the ANC councillor candidate for the by-elections.

During her election campaign, Chauke said she had lived in Kaalfontein since 2005 and had identified many challenges in the community that still needed to be addressed such as the need for housing and the ending of corruption.

“People must understand that they cannot buy land from someone who does not own the land, therefore people must avoid being caught in the middle of a corrupt system of illegal sales,” said Chauke.

Members of Sanco came out in numbers to support one of their own and the regional secretary of the organisation in the Greater Johannesburg Region, Atwell Kamani said they have identified three major problems in the community – unemployment, poverty and inequality.

ANC supporters Tsepo Selemela, Paulina Ledwaba, Atwell Kamani, Lekwane Phasha, Violet Chauke, Maake Maake and Silas Lambani.

Kamani’s words were echoed by the Sanco Zone 15 chairperson Silas Lambani who added that Chauke was a people’s person and had been involved in the development of the community for years, not only politically.

Midrand has 11 wards and in the previous by-election, nine were won by the ANC and two by the Democratic Alliance (DA). The DA has nominated Otto Kgeletsane as their candidate this year while the Economic Freedom Fighters have put forward Calvin Mokgawa.
