Councillor’s Corner: Safety at our public parks

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner.

This week’s question is:

Joburg has many parks and we frequent them as a family. But the safety of our parks is sometimes in question. Who is responsible for ensuring the safety of parkgoers?

Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele, answers:

Residents in the City of Johannesburg visit parks for various reasons such as a family picnics, walking dogs, jogging etc. Therefore safety is a key consideration for parkgoers. Parks are open from 6am to 6pm. Parkgoers must ensure that they use parks during the official operating hours. Most of the bigger parks usually have security personnel at the entrance of the park. In addition, the City employs park rangers that assist with security in our parks. However, the above security may not be sufficient, so residents need to be vigilant and always be aware of their surroundings and to ensure that their personal belongings are always kept safe whilst at the park.
