Midrand police together with the Metro police visited Halfway House Primary School for a talk about the consequences of bad behaviour on 15 March.
Grade 6 and 7 pupils were warned about stealing, bullying and the use of illegal substances in and out of school premises.
“According to South African law, a child as young as 10 years old can be imprisoned, therefore, children must avoid starting unwanted habits from a young age because they only become worse as they grow older,” said Nomsa Ndaba, a Metro police officer.
Halfway House Primary School principal Silas Pillay said he is pleased with the relationship the school has with the Midrand police because he likes to take a proactive stance in ensuring children’s safety, through hosting such talks with the learners.
“Halfway House Primary has a zero tolerance for bullying, therefore the school has counsellors as well as procedures for children to report bullying incidences or any other problems,” said Pillay.
“The school has regular training workshops for teachers to assist them in dealing with children as well as how to handle bullying or other incidents that may take place in the school.
Midrand police spokesperson, Matome Tlamela said the police will have ongoing visits to the school to ensure that children do not fall into the trap of criminal activities at a young age because all criminals start small with pens, or chocolates, among other things, and thereafter it escalates.
