Midrand police, along with the Metro police visited the Pearson Institute of Higher Education for a student safety discussion in Glen Austin, Midrand on 8 March.
The discussion focused on addressing student concerns relating to crime and their safety. Students had previously – through their Student Representatives Council – raised concerns about being victims of crime every time they travel to and from campus.
Glen Austin is full of open fields and large trees that are not maintained, which makes it easy for criminals to hide out and wait for an easy target.
Social Crime Officer, Teboho Ramufhufhu said he will be giving away 100 pepper sprays with the assistance of Memeza (an organization contributing towards the fight against crime in South Africa focused on protecting the vulnerable) and 100 personal alarm systems, which will allegedly send an alert to the police if pressed.
Only the students who are most in need will be given these helpful devices, according to Ramufhufhu.
All stakeholders will be hosting an activation campaign targeting crime, substance abuse, violence and other challenges which students face.
A drop-box will be placed on campus which is aimed at allowing students to anonymously give the institution and police tips of where the crime is happening and who is responsible.
All stakeholders are pleased with the measures that will be put in place to try and curb the spread of crimes targeted at students.
