Head of marketing at Fourways Mall Zoe van Onselen said that a couple were robbed in the parking lot at Fourways View on 17 March.
“The alleged perpetrators fled the centre and made their way to the Sasol Garage on the corner of Fourways Boulevard where they hijacked a getaway vehicle. Fourways Mall’s Armed Response team reacted and shots were fired,” said van Onselen.
“The perpetrators managed to escape and drove toward the R511. The vehicle was fitted with a tracking device, which the SAPS used to find the perpetrators and arrest them in Sandton.”
Van Onselen added that no visitors, staff or security personnel were injured during the incident.
“Fourways Mall is currently cooperating with SAPS in the ongoing investigation. One side of Percy Street in Fourways remains closed until further notice due to SAPS activity,” added van Onselen.
Provincial police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said that a couple were robbed by two suspects at the robots close to the Fourways Mall parking lot.
“They fled to the Sasol garage only to find the Douglasdale police were also at the garage,” said Makhubela
However, Douglasdale police said that the alleged shootout at Fourways Mall was a hoax.
Head of communications at Douglasdale police station Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said, “The people who are doing this are just circulating lies as they did weeks ago saying that there was a shootout at the mall.”
Fourways community members took to Twitter earlier today to report the shooting incident.
