Sector 1 chair shares tips

MIDRAND – Midrand's Sector 1 has shared some of the challenges the sector faces and identified some solutions.

The chairperson of Midrand‘s Sector 1, Bruce Beevers has shared some of the challenges the sector faces and possible solutions.

Beevers said, “We as a sector are struggling to get the residents to report crime along with its details including date and time because at times attempted house break-ins and fence cutting is never reported to either the police nor the Community Policing Forum.

“It’s important for the community to realise that the more crimes are reported the more alert the police can be, regardless of how small or serious the crime was, it should be reported.”

The sector is said to be in need of more volunteers. At the moment there are only 10 patrollers assigned to the sector yet it covers areas such as Randjesfontein, Glen Austin, Grand Central Airport, Gautrain Depot, President Park, Glen Austin Ext 3, Jukskei View and Waterfall Estates (from Old Johannesburg Road towards the cemetery).

Beevers is calling on the community to join local sector activities and meetings as well as report any of crime, even if it seems like a simple suspicion and nothing more.

He asks residents to clearly number their properties according to the street number and not their plot number for the benefit of all security-related organisations in times of need because it affects the response time in case of an emergency.

“Plot numbering is difficult as it does not show on Google maps.Long grass should be cut and trees trimmed to prevent people hiding out, especially criminals, and litter should be removed outside properties since it may be markings for people to commit crimes.”
