Parents of Umqhele Secondary schoolchildren in Ivory Park held a brief protest on 31 January.
The parents protested about the dilapidated state of mobile classrooms that have been used by the school for years while waiting for proper structures.
The police were called to the scene after protesters blocked the entrance of the school.
The spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane said, “We want to commend all involved for the peaceful manner in which everything went.”
Officials from the Gauteng Department of Education arrived at the school during the protest and requested that the protesters meet with the school governing body.
“We can confirm that our officials visited the school and refurbishments will be undertaken in due course,” said the spokesperson for the department, Steve Mabona.
He added that the department had a plan to replace 80 mobile schools in the province.
“We cannot do them all at once due to budgetary constraints,” Mabona explained.
