Local female priest speaks love and healing

MIDRAND – Cookie Makaba, a 67-year-old priest and author, is studying towards her master's degree.

Noordwyk-based priest Cookie Makaba has written two books inspired by her upbringing in an abusive environment and her divorce experience.

Makaba is a priest at the Anglican Church and a marriage counsellor, where she hosts couples every week. The 67-year-old was born in the Eastern Cape and has been a Midrand resident for more than 10 years. She said she grew up witnessing her mother being abused and had to endure changes after her parents separated.

“I had to stay with my stepmother. We did not have a place called home as my father was a doctor going around looking for business.”

Her book, The woman in me, talks about her life journey and the challenges she went through. It also touches on woman empowerment. Her second book, The Eden of relationships, is mainly about relationships. Makaba wrote this book after going through her divorce.

Cookie Makaba has published two books inspired by her painful life experiences.

“Gladly to say after going through it all, I still believe in marriage and happy relationships. In this book, I’m giving healthy exercises for healthy relationships. It contains practical exercises for you and your partner.”

Through her books and seminars, she has focused on many issues facing South Africa women. She has been an important role model for black South African women, breaking down many invisible barriers from abuse to empowerment.

She holds a BA (Hons) degree from Unisa and currently studies towards her master’s in philosophical theologies.

“I travel the world sharing my experiences and my journey to help people recover from abuse – how to better themselves and sending them to school.”
