Maphutha Secondary School in Mayibuye attained an 87,2 per cent matric pass mark which was a 9 per cent drop from the previous year.
In 2016, the school achieved a 96,6 per cent pass mark which was an 18,9 per cent improvement from the previous year. “I am disappointed with the decline,” said the school’s principal Kwena Nthlane. “I was not expecting less than 90 per cent. However, we worked hard considering that we had more than 100 progress learners.”
Despite the decrease, Nthlane was confident that this year’s matric class would do well. “We can still do better and improve with our next class.”
The top achiever of the school Siyabonga Mthethwa who earned three distinctions said his achievement didn’t come as a surprise. “I always strive to be the best. I worked super hard and took extra tutorials,” he said.
The 17-year-old is looking forward to studying actuarial science at the university of his choice.
