Road closures for New Year’s Eve celebrations

JOHANNESBURG – New Year's Eve celebrations will see a number of roads closed.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has announced that it will close all access roads leading to the M1 North and South on the Double Decker section for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The New Year’s Eve concert hosted by the City of Johannesburg will take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square and Newtown Park from 31 December this year to 1 January next year.

“To ensure safety of our teams as well as road users, the closure of the said section will commence at 8pm and may fully reopen after 1am on New Year’s Day,” said the assistant communications manager for the agency, Nonhlanhla Nxumalo.

Sections which will be closed include the following:

  • M1 South Smit Street on-ramp: motorists are advised to use Smit Street off-ramp
  • M1 South Carr Street on-ramp
  • M1 North, Crown interchange to Double Decker: motorists are advised to use M2 East
  • M2 West, Crown interchange to Double Decker
  • M1 North on-ramp from Booysens Road, Selby to M1 North Double Decker.

“The M2 East,  Eloff Street on-ramp will not be closed but motorist should be made aware that access to M1 North is closed.”
